Newry
General Information
Newry is close to the border with the Republic of Ireland and is located in Country Down, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. It became a port in 1742 and was given city status in 2002 as part of Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee celebrations.
Newry has two of the greatest shopping centres in Northern Ireland – Buttercrane Centre and The Quays attracting a large number of shoppers from all over the country. There is also an assortment of traditional independent stores which combine for a superb shopping experience.
The city has a long and notable history from the yew tree planting by St Patrick through to Nicholas Bagenal who colonised Newry, rebuilt the burnt castle and in 1578 erected the Parish of St Patrick’s.
The population and popularity of the city has steadily been on the increase of the recent years, surrounded by lovely towns, many public parks with the splendid Mourne Mountains in the background Newry is a beautiful place to visit.
