The Mourne Mountains are the highest and most dramatic mountain range in Northern Ireland, its summits crowned by granite tors. The Mournes are divided into 2 very distinctive areas: the Eastern or ‘High’ Mournes and the Western or ‘Low’ Mournes.
The mountains themselves are criss-crossed by an amazing network of paths, tracks & trails. The area was voted the ‘Best Walking Destination’ in Northern Ireland in WalkNI's inaugural awards. The routes provide enthusiastic walkers with loads of opportunities for exploration.
The Mournes are visited by many tourists, hillwalkers, cyclists and rock climbers. Situated in the County Down, the Mourne Mountains are famous for a lot of things... Challenging peaks, gentle slopes and crystalline lakes.
Rising highest above its siblings at around 850 metres, Slieve Donard is the tallest peak. The climb is rather tough but the views out over Murlough Bay and the small town of Newcastle make it worth the effort.
